Recent tensions between Blizzard and EA Mythic have got me to thinking of how there are some good rivalries, hatreds, and partnerships in videogames. World of Warcraft vs Warhammer is but a piece in a larger war between Blizzard and makers of Games Workshop titles. There is the ongoing feud with ex iD, ex Ion Storm, etc. super jerks John Romero and Mark Wilson. But people can also play nice. Valve and iD and Ken Levine all have a great working relationship and cooperation.

The parabola, aside from being a word that I once used in high school that I never use now, is a handy thing to have. In this case, the parabola comes in the form of a cool little Wi Fi extension device. The Windsurfer parabolic reflector not only works, but you can get your hands on one for free, basically. You download this template, cut out the pattern, glue on some aluminum foil, and stick it on your antenna. That simple.

Enough doom, gloom about videogames. The truth is that there are many companies and game makers trying new ways of releasing and making money off of their games. Valve, Arena Net, PopCap, the independent developers have made some very smart decisions on how to keep their games supported, and profitable. Let’s get phase one out of the way from the bat; make a good game that is worth buying.

I really wish I could remember who spoke these words, but the comparison of video games to Hollywood need to stop. The game industry is nowhere near as smart as the makers of movies and television are. Sadly, I cannot properly credit the GDC speaker for these pearls of wisdom. But they get to the heart of why an allegedly recession proof industry is losing money hand over fist and laying off relatively large numbers of people. Television and Movies are almost the same, just omit the theatrical release or substitute “Premiere” and the model is exactly the same.

Stardust is an easy book to fall in love with. Probably my favorite aspect to the book is that, unlike other fantasy novels, Stardust is not full of nonsense words and jargon. Now I can enjoy a made up language like the other guy, I do possess a Galactic Federation Passport, but it is refreshing the way Neil Geiman writes his fantasy. Stardust is another part of his arsenal, blending fantasy world with the real world.

In these leaner times many stores, publishers, web services are tightening their belts, or going under. Yahoo has seen its stock nearly cut in half relative to the Microsoft offer earlier in the year. Electronic Arts, THQ, Midway have all laid off or cut away significant parts of their personnel. Recently CompUSA shut down completely, and Circuit City has just filed for bankruptcy. Some of this is a sign of the times, the rest is the natural progression of the life of a company.

I remarked on the podcast about a distinct lack of horror films for this Halloween season. There were many more comedies than I would normally associate with the season. Films like Sex Drive and Sack and Miri Make a Porno were the film highlights of the season. There was a new Saw, but that is like saying the snow melts in late March. But here it is, November, and I cannot think of any holiday movies set for the Christmas season.

As promised, bile and hatred for Fallout 3. The game is indeed good, and I may have spoken prematurely about the rise of a new golden age. Fallout 3 is, to quote The Fly, “synthetic.” It has the chemical make-up of a Fallout game, even sounds a bit like one, but it lacks that love and detail that makes it truly feel like Fallout. Not only that, but so much of this game is ham handed.
